In tune with the times

Set in the Sussex countryside, the world famous Opera House at Glyndebourne stages around 120 live performances every year. But with poor 3G/4G mobile coverage, its WiFi network lacked power, capacity and coverage. Glyndebourne asked us to design and deliver a new network to provide hassle-free connection for staff, production crews and performers – as well as more than 150,000 visitors – across the site, without dead zones. At the same time, we had to preserve the unique fabric of the Elizabethan manor house, which is a Listed building, and its grounds.

We specified a full-stack Cisco Meraki solution, incorporating extensive MS series switching and MR indoor and outdoor wireless access points, to provide campus-wide connectivity. Extensive MX security devices protect both public and sensitive company data, while the perimeter firewall and content filtering and blocking protocols ensure users can’t access content or applications that put them, or the network, at risk. The WiFi infrastructure, comprising primary cabling, RF access points and radio mesh links, guarantees comprehensive coverage both indoors and outdoors throughout the site, including peripheral areas like car parks.

Glyndebourne can effortlessly scale up network capacity on performance days. By logging in via a simple click-through splash page, visitors can email, tweet and upload photos, explore interactive information on art installations in the gardens and grounds, and buy tickets through the online box office. In the first season, Glyndebourne gathered over 11,000 email addresses, providing opportunities for marketing future events.

“With Focus Integration, we found the right solution, at the right cost. Whatever the demand, the network simply handles it – and day-to-day management is simplicity itself.”

Richard Wells, Head of IT, Glyndebourne
