Focus Integration helps Northampton School for Girls achieve excellence in education delivery
Seamless installation of a new resilient LAN infrastructure gives teachers, administrators and pupils access to reliable ICT services

Connecting an entire school community
Northampton School for Girls (NSG) is a comprehensive secondary school, with around 1,600 girls aged 11-18 on its roll. The first school in England to achieve specialist Music College status, NSG has academy status, and is funded and maintained directly by the Department for Education.
The school called us in to provide a more robust, easy-to-manage replacement for a legacy 3COM LAN infrastructure. The ageing network suffered frequent and unexpected switch failures, ‘broadcast’ storms and telephony ‘drops’; limited bandwidth performance and recurring outages meant staff and students were often locked out of essential teaching resources, admin tools and business applications.
To ensure high-speed connectivity and reliable service, we proposed a Cisco Meraki 10Gb LAN infrastructure. We pre-configured the equipment off-site, which both minimised disruption and enabled us to get the network up and running in just four days, during the Easter break. By using the school’s existing fibre infrastructure, and halving the number of network ports, we saved NSG around £10K. We also negotiated a three-year interest-free Cisco Capital Easy Lease deal, reducing delays and avoiding major up-front capital expenditure.
The new LAN delivers the high-speed data transfers required in today’s connected, collaborative teaching and learning environment. The Cisco Meraki cloud-based dashboard gives the IT team full visibility and centralised control of the entire network, including connected devices. Day-to-day monitoring and enforcement of network policies is simplicity itself, while the IT team can image devices remotely in minutes, rather than hours.
“From the outset, it was clear that Focus were committed to helping the school find the best possible resolution. Their technical know-how was, without question, the best we had encountered and they were also mindful of the unique operating requirements of a modern education institution. With a reliable and stable network in place we’re able to pursue our technology vision with confidence.”
