Delivering a better connected experience at Woldingham School
Woldingham School needs to ensure staff and pupils can take advantage of secure, always-available connectivity - no matter where they are on campus
Creating a thriving learning environment
Set in 700 acres in the Surrey Hills, Woldingham School is a Catholic boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18. The school is justly proud of its academic record; through its THRIVE programme, it also aims to give girls the confidence, resilience and self-worth to enjoy their successes and learn from setbacks.
The school keenly embraces online technology: the number of devices connecting to the network has more than quadrupled in the past three years, to more than 2,400. However, the main school site, including the boarding houses, had the inevitable WiFi dead zones and intermittent coverage, causing frustration, particularly at peak times.
The school asked us to develop a fast, reliable infrastructure that would meet the growing demands of pupils, teachers and support staff. As well as providing teaching and learning resources, the infrastructure needed to support the school’s multi-million pound business functions, including marketing, HR, payroll and site security.
We completely redesigned the network, replacing all switches, and installed 80+ access points in the main teaching buildings and boarding accommodation to provide seamless access to the school’s learning platform and other resources. Remote buildings, recreational areas and outdoor spaces that previously lacked connectivity were fully incorporated onto the network.
Through the Cisco Meraki cloud management console, the IT team can view all network traffic, set up event logs, and configure alerts and group policies: powerful central content monitoring provides essential student safeguarding. Teaching and student supervision and management applications are maintained independently, with a separate staff tool ensuring confidentiality.
“Today the IT team has centralised control and management of services across the entire site. We spend less time troubleshooting issues, and more time focused on delivering enhanced education and outreach services for staff, students and parents.”
